Information about Coaching Responsibilities
Although each event varies, most Science Olympiad ("SO") coaches and assistant coaches ("AC") hold event classes at OVMS after school or in the evenings from September - November. Classes are one hour long, and typically have 15 - 35 students per class. Class sizes are reduced and reallocated by November when the teams for Regional are selected. Classes continue to prepare weekly, and sometimes more often as we get closer to the Regional competition in February 2019. Classes for Regional Finalists who will represent the State team at a competition in April will continue, but they are far smaller. At that point you may spend your coaching efforts helping students prepare for the event and answering any final questions.
As a coach and assistant coach you can expect to spend a few hours outside of class each week preparing your teaching materials. We have some resources from previous years, and there is a lot of material available on the SO national website. Having a substantive background or interest in the subject matter is extremely helpful, but not required. Your child is permitted and encouraged to take the event you are coaching.
Each event needs one coach and one assistant coach. All coaches must have "Level I" (Megan's Law; Negative TB Clearance; and Volunteer Code of Conduct) AND "Level II" clearance (fingerprint and DOJ background check) through PUSD. You will be teaching students while not in the presence of OVMS faculty, so we need to make sure all of our children are safe and that you are protected. No classes can be held without the presence of a Level II-cleared coach and/or assistant coach. OVMS administrative staff will help with getting this clearance.
Every other adult volunteer must have Level I clearance.
Thank you for stepping up to help the OVMS Science Olympiad team!
Required Clearance Procedures
Level I Clearance
Please fill out and submit these documents directly to OVMS, or visit the PUSD Health Services Page and the Volunteer Information Page for more details.
1. Megan's Law Background Check Form
2. Volunteer Code of Conduct
3. Optional: Clearance Transfer Request (from other school site)
4. Complete TB Testing or get clearance, or a negative X-Ray and deliver proof to OMVS.
Level II Clearance: In order to start processing your Level II Clearance, please contact Stephanie Johnston at OVMS directly: email@example.com
Please note that Level I and Level II clearances from other PUSD schools should be transferable provided they have not expired. Those testing positive for TB may be required to get a "clear" X-Ray provided by their personal physician or through the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Please contact Stephanie Johnston for more information.
Due to recent changes in State Law, PUSD is no longer offering TB testing. Please see your local health care provider to complete your testing.
