Information about Coaching Responsibilities
Although each event varies, most Science Olympiad ("SO") coaches and assistant coaches ("AC") hold event classes at OVMS after school or in the evenings from September - late October. Classes are 1.0-1.5 hours long and typically have 15 - 30 students per class. Class sizes are reduced and reallocated by early November when the teams for Regionals are selected. Classes continue to prepare weekly, and sometimes more frequently, as we get closer to the Regional competition in February 2024. Classes for Regional Finalists who will represent the State team in the April State Tournament will continue informally. At that point, you may spend your coaching efforts helping students prepare for the event and answering any final questions. As a coach and assistant coach, you can expect to spend several hours outside of class each week preparing your teaching materials. We have some resources from previous years, and there is a lot of material available on the SO national website. Having a substantive educational or work background or interest in the subject matter is extremely helpful, but not required. Your child is permitted and encouraged to take the event you are coaching. Each event needs one coach and one assistant coach. All coaches must have "Level 1" (Megan's Law; Negative TB Clearance; and Volunteer Code of Conduct) AND "Level 2" clearance (fingerprint and DOJ background check) through PUSD. You will be teaching students while not in the presence of OVMS faculty, so we need to make sure all of our children are safe and that you are protected. No classes can be held without the presence of a Level 2-cleared coach and/or assistant coach. OVMS administrative staff will help with getting this clearance. Every other adult volunteer must have at least a Level 1 clearance. Thank you for stepping up to help the OVMS Science Olympiad team! |
